Running an individual check against sanctions lists
The individual check lets you screen a single name on the fly – a person or a company – against the sanctions lists enabled for your access. You see the result on screen immediately: a red block for hits, a green block when nothing was found. You can then archive the result.
Requirements
- An access with the sanctions lists module enabled. Which lists are checked depends on what is enabled for you (e.g. EU sanctions lists and possibly further sanctions lists or HADDEX).
- The name you check must be at least 4 characters long (excluding spaces).
Step by step
- Open “Run Individual Check” from the menu.
- In the “Name / Company to Check” field, enter the name. Enter the name only –
without titles, salutations or additions. Common legal-form abbreviations (GmbH, KG, OHG,
Ltd, Inc) are fine. For persons, use the format First Name Last Name.
- Not ideal:
Herr Max Mustermann,Musterfirma GmbH Hr. Max Mustermann,Dipl. Ing. Dr. Max Mustermann - Correct:
Max Mustermann,Musterfirma GmbH,Musterfirma Musterstadt GmbH
- Not ideal:
- If needed, under “Search Pattern” choose the required percentage of agreement
(e.g.
100 % (Exact match),90 %,80 %) or “Any Name Part”. The lower the percentage, the more similar spellings are found. - If needed, set “Name Variants” to “Yes” to also check reordered (permuted) versions of the name.
- Click “Check”. While the search runs, “Please wait…” appears briefly.
The search form with the “Name / Company to Check”, “Search Pattern” and “Name Variants” fields and the “Check” button.
- Read the result:
- Red block – “Hits Found!”: your search returned hits on the sanctions lists. Each hit shows the percentage of agreement. Assess every hit on its merits before you make a decision.
- Green block – “No Hits Found”: your search returned no hits on the sanctions lists for the search pattern you chose.
Hit display: red “Hits Found!” block showing the percentage of agreement for each individual hit.
- Keep the result: use “Print” or “PDF” to create a screening protocol. With “Archive Result” you store the result – optionally with “Your Reference” and “Comment” – in the archive, and you can add the name to ongoing list screening (monitoring) if needed. See Archive a result & add to monitoring.
Good to know
- Which lists are checked depends on what is enabled for you. The individual check works module-neutrally: if further modules are active (PEP, Dow Jones), you can screen the same name afterwards via “Run Another Individual Check” or in a single pass with the Consolidated individual check.
- Minimum length: if the name is shorter than 4 characters (excluding spaces), the message appears: “The entered name is too short (minimum 4 characters without spaces).”
- Search pattern
100 % (Exact match)returns only exact name matches; lower values are more tolerant of spelling differences. “Any Name Part” checks individual parts of the name. More on this in Configuring search options. - Test account: in a test access the message “Test account: Checks run against reduced test lists and are not representative.” appears. Results from a test access are therefore not meaningful.
- Pre-filled name: if you open the individual check from a saved record or from the monitoring list, the name field is already filled in.
Frequently asked questions
What do the red and green blocks in the result mean? A red block (“Hits Found!”) shows hits on the sanctions lists, each with a percentage of agreement. A green block (“No Hits Found”) means there are no hits for the search pattern you chose.
Should I enter titles, salutations or the legal form?
No. Enter the name only – without titles, salutations or additions (so Max Mustermann
instead of Mr Dr Max Mustermann). Common abbreviations such as GmbH, KG or OHG are fine.
My name is rejected as “too short”. The name must contain at least 4 characters excluding spaces. Enter a more meaningful or longer name.
Which lists is the name checked against? Against the sanctions lists enabled for your access (e.g. EU sanctions lists and possibly further lists or HADDEX). Which ones these are depends on what is enabled for you.
How do I find more hits for a differing spelling?
Lower the search pattern (e.g. to 90 % or 80 %) or choose “Any Name Part” and turn
on “Name Variants”. See Configuring search options.
How do I keep the result? Use “Print”/“PDF” for a protocol, or “Archive Result” to store it permanently and optionally add it to monitoring.
